“We are devastated by the Governor’s decision to support the charter public school moratorium and allow it to become law.
Nothing about this bill improves educational outcomes for children in Rhode Island. And it does nothing to address declining enrollment across our public education system.
In fact, it accomplishes the exact opposite. This new law means even fewer children in Rhode Island will have access to a public school that is right for them. And it means families will have fewer options, leaving many students to languish in schools that are not meeting their needs or forcing families to decide to exit our public education system altogether.
While supporters are framing this legislation as necessary to address district budgetary challenges, the truth is this bill does not provide an additional cent to public schools. Both the General Assembly and the Governor had an opportunity to address systemic funding issues in public education through the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission. But they chose not to move that legislation forward.
Instead, they decided to scapegoat charter public school families, students, and teachers. For what? Only they can answer that question. What we know for sure is that they did not do it because it is what is best for kids and families. Nor did they do it to support the wishes of Rhode Island voters, the majority of whom believe Rhode Island’s families should have more access to charter public schools, not less.
While this law will unequivocally limit future opportunities for students, it does not change the strong outcomes being achieved by charter public schools across our state or the growing demand from families seeking those opportunities.
Students and families will feel the impact of this law, and the League will continue to stand with them, advocate for great public schools, and fight for a system that puts children’s needs ahead of politics.”
